Connaissances politiques et participation politique à l'ère numérique : ce que change l'internet

Abstract : The last twenty years have witnessed a development of the Internet which brought a substantial change to the modes through which citizens get information. This article analyses the potential effect of this transformation on the political awareness and political participation among the French society. Using survey data on a representative sample of French citizens we attempt to build the typology of Internet users and non-users. Further we attempt to understand the consequences of the different Internet usage patterns on acquiring awareness of the political facts and on political engagement. We find a significant positive impact of the intensity of the Internet usage on political participation but a limited impact on political awareness.
