Dévoilement de soi et réponses du consommateur face à une sollicitation de ses données personnelles : une application aux formulaires sur Internet

Abstract : The companies must collect personal data on their customers, in order to make drawing proposals and thus create their loyalty. However, this acquisition and the use which is made of, run up against the right to privacy. This phenomenon is even more important on the Internet, which actually constitutes an excellent ground of application. The objective of our research is to measure and explain the answers of the French consumers towards the requests of personal information. Our work is first based on a review of the literature and on two exploratory studies and proposes to identify the factors having an influence on the consumers’ attitudes and behaviors. This approach results in a conceptual model which aims at exposing the decision process of the individual, from its exposure to the request, to its answer. Then, we test this model by the means of an original experimental methodology. Three successive studies are thus undertaken, with a varied public. The results make possible to validate all the stages of the process of answer. They also show that the individual decides more on the basis of situation than according to his personal convictions; so the situational factors have a major impact. If the effect of the privacy policy and the quantity of required data is proven, that corresponding to the context in which information is requested and to the level of familiarity with the company is more delicate to apprehend.
